Come picking mushrooms in Claudy: recycling officer

LONDONDERRY’s chief recycling officer Julie Hannaway is inviting people to come picking mushrooms in the Ervey Woods this weekend.

The aim is to explore wild food and also learn how to reduce household waste.

“This is a unique opportunity for members of the public to discover Derry’s Ancient woodlands to find out what’s in season now and learn what can be found at other times of the year,” she said.

“It will be followed by a cooking demo with Chef Barry O’Brien from the award winning Beech Hill Country House. Throughout the demonstration Barry will be highlighting the Love Food Hate Waste initiative and will give some great tips on eating for free and making the most of seasonal produce, your leftovers and store cupboard favourites.”

The ‘Foods of the Forest’ event will take place in Ervey Woods, Claudy this Saturday from 11am – 2pm.

The Council’s Recycling officer also advised that it continue to promote waste reduction at next week’s Big Christmas Lights Switch On (November 21) when it brings its ‘Love Food Hate Waste’ stand to the Guildhall.

“We are asking members of the public to come along and visit the Love Food Hate Waste demonstration kitchen at the Christmas illuminations where you will be guaranteed to pick up some great tips and advice to help you reduce waste this Christmas,” she said.

For more information contact Julie Hannaway at Derry City Council on (028) 71375151 or Julie.hannaway@derrycity.gov.uk.
