Bar fire 'suspicious'
A FIRE which gutted a well known Londonderry city centre bar is being treated as suspicious according to the PSNI. The blaze which broke out at Sister Sara's on Little James Street at around 1.30am this morning (Nov 26) was attended by 50 firefighters and seven appliances.
One person was taken to hospital after suffering smoke inhalation. The Fire Service are still assessing the structural safety of the building. Little James Street and Sackville Street are also still closed to traffic.
Residents at an adjoining complex of flats were evacuated. Michael Doherty, director of the Peace and Reconcilation Group opened up his Bishop Street premises to provide temporary accomodation for affected visting tourists.
Residents have still not been permitted to return to their homes.
Station Commander Kevin Lynch said the incident was "quite serious".
"We had a lot of concerns early on, primarily with the threat to life in the flats. When the fire did go out through the window on gable end of the block of flats, and it took a lot of effort to make sure the fire didn't get through to the flats," he said.
Police have appealed for anyone who was in Sister Sara's from 6pm onwards yesterday to contact them at Strand Road police station.
