‘Banned’ Fellini film at Magic Lantern
LONDONDERRY’S Magic Lantern Film society will be screening ‘Nights of Cabiria,’ Federico Fellini’s film about the travails of a Roman prostitute, as part of its series of formerly banned films on Thursday (April 26) at the Nerve Centre.
The film commences at 7.30pm at the Nerve Centre in Magazine street and the admission charge is £4.
In the last of its serious of banned and censored films Magic Lantern will be screening ‘Nights of Cabiria’.
Perhaps the most humanistic of Fellini’s pictures, Nights of Cabiria is a heartbreaking foray into the breezy Rome evenings, a tragic portrayal of empty hopes, frustration, and shattered pride.
It features quite possibly the greatest performance ever from Giulietta Masina. She stars as Cabiria, a prostitute in Rome who doesn’t let the realities of life interfere with her optimism.
In Italy the film was initially banned to under 16’s, and later, when some scenes were cut, the Nights of Cabiria was finally permitted to be screened to a universal audience.
