ALMOST 600 dogs have been killed by Derry City Council over the past four years under the Dogs Order 1983 and the Dogs (Amendment) Act 2011.

Agriculture and Rural Development Minister Michelle O’Neill provided details of the number of dogs put down here in response to an Assembly Question. The total number of dogs killed was 577; 170 in 2009; 178 in 2010; 150 in 2011; and 79 up until September 30, 2012.

She said the figures included the total number of stray and unwanted dogs destroyed by the Council and destruction orders issued by Courts following dog attacks on people or animals for the three complete calendar years 2009 - 2011 and for the period running from 1 January - 30 September 2012.
