18 killed at work last year

THE amount of people killed at work in Northern Ireland last year spiked to 18, Derry City Council’s Environmental Services Committee has heard.

The amount of work deaths rose from 14 in 2010/11. The majority of the deaths related to farm accidents - nine in total.

A report by Londonderry’s Chief Environmental Health Officer referred to the stark figures contained in a recently released Health and Safety Executive (NI) Statistics Booklet.

The booklet, which covers the period April 2011 to March 2012, also contains information on district council statistics in relation to accident notifications.

“Unfortunately during this reported period the number of fatal accidents has risen to 18 fatal injuries which is an increase in 4 in the total number of fatalities from the previous year,” the Council report states.

“The majority of these fatal injuries (9) occurred in the agricultural sector and as a consequence HSENI are directing more resources and targeting specific campaigns to this area.

“The number of other reported injuries have declined in this period however it is recognised that there is still a significant degree of under-reporting of workplace accidents and incidents,” it adds.
