Teachers have been attacked a shocking 38 times in just five years in the Western Education and Library Board (WELB) area, which covers both Limavady and Londonderry.

The shock statistic was revealed by Education Minister John O’Dowd this week in response to a query by North Down MLA Peter Weir.

The Minister detailed statistics for each of Northern Ireland’s Education and Library Board areas. Across Northern Ireland as a whole, teachers have been attacked a full 423 times since 2009/11.

In the WELB area, there were six attacks on teachers during 2009/10, another 10 during 2010/11, a further seven the following year, six in 2012/13 and nine this year (2013/14).

The Education and Library Board area with the highest number of attacks on teachers in the past five years has been Belfast. In Belfast, there were 62 attacks on teachers during 2009/10, another 31 the following year, 40 in 2011/12, 42 in 2012/13 and 32 this year.
