No planning application for the planned Factory Girls sculpture has been received, although Environment Minister Mark H Durkan believes one “will be forthcoming”.

Mr Durkan made the revelation this week in response to a query from Foyle MLA Maeve McLaughlin. The Minister, also a Foyle MLA, replied: “My Department has not received a planning application for the erection of the Factory Girls Sculpture in Harbour Square, Derry. However, I am aware that pre application discussions have taken place. My planning officials have met with officials from the Department of Social Development and also Derry City Council regarding the proposed development. It is anticipated that a planning application will be forthcoming.”

Artist Louise Walsh started work on the sculpture in 2006. It had been originally planned the piece would be located at King Street in the Waterside.

A series of delays, dating back years, has meant the sculpture is still not in place.
