Prisoners started at least 84 fires in jail

Prisoners intentionally or recklessly started fires in Magilligan jail at least 84 times between 2009 and 2013, it’s been revealed.

Meanwhile, 484 prisoners were disciplined for possessing unauthorised items or possessing too many authorised items.

Justice Minister David Ford made the revelation in response to an Assembly Question.

He revealed that there were 1,484 breaches of prison rules recorded in the jail over the five year period.
