This year marks the 300th Anniversary of the Formation of the Apprentice Boys Association by Colonel John Mitchelburne.

Colonel Mitchelburne played a prominent role in the Siege as joint Governor. He is credited with flying the Crimson Flag from St Columb’s Cathedral in 1689 and forming the first Apprentice Boys of Derry Club in 1714, making him founding father of the Association.

The Mitchelburne Parent Club has designated June as a charity month and many events were organised to mark the Tercentenary, with money raised going to the Apprentice Boys Benevolent Fund.

Two challenges took place. On Sunday, June 1 after months of training and fundraising, Bro Connor McKnight completed the Walled City Marathon in three hours and 42 minutes, while on June 28 Mitchelburne Parent Club members completed a climb to the peak of Sawel Mountain, which lies on the Co Londonderry/Tyrone border.
