Londonderry’s farmers could be the greatest losers in Thursday’s elections, it was claimed by Alliance this week.
In a statement David Hawthorne, farmer and Alliance candidate said: “The new Derry-Strabane Council faces the prospect of possibly having no farmers involved.
A stock and arable organic farmer at Brackfield, Hawthorne continued: “This is critical for the success of the new Council. Vote for someone who will speak for everyone and fight for the farmer and rural dweller. Recently I have received support from all voters from all Parties and even long-standing members and former councillors from all parties including Sinn Fein, SDLP, UUP and DUP because they want someone who will fight for farmers and for all who live in our rural area”.
He added that farming was not just an occupation, it was a fundamental way of life and providing food was vital for everyone’s future and should not be taken for granted.
