The inquest opened on Monday at Magherafelt into the tragic death of 15-year-old, Kyle Bonnes, who died on April 7, 2010, in Faughan River.

The Inquest heard from six civilian witnesses including Mark Sergeant, who helped rescue Kyle from the Faughan River after the teenager got into trouble.

Witnesses recalled how Kyle had entered the river at a treacherous point, known locally as the Big Hole, and one of them, Robert Brolly, told the inquest that due to the fast flowing nature of the river that particular stretch was subject at times to a whirlpool effect which would have dragged the teenager under.

The inquest heard Kyle shared a 10-glass bottle of vodka with a friend and witnesses said Kyle had appeared “off his head”.

On Tuesday Constables Olphert and Rainey gave evidence. At hearing.
