Londonderry woman Vera McCready, whose son Shaun died from epilepsy last year, has received a volunteer of the year award from Epilepsy Action.
Shaun (aged 30) died as a result of Sudden Unexpected Death in Epilepsy (SUDEP) in February 2013. Son-in-law Gareth Johnson organised a football tournament and social evening in Londonderry and raised over £10,000 in memory of Shaun.
Vera’s daughter, Verona Frankish, accepted the award. She said: “On behalf of the McCready family, I’m honoured to accept this award from Epilepsy Action.
“We will continue to fundraise in Shaun’s honour, as we are on a permanent crusade to raise awareness about epilepsy and improve research. But none of what we have done, or are doing, is about recognition or receiving awards for ourselves – it’s about honouring the man that we miss every day.”
