Fire at Magilligan: unit evacuated

A fire at HMP Magilligan caused the evacuation of a prisoner’s accommodation unit this afternoon, the Northern Ireland Prison Service has confirmed.

A spokesman for the Prison Service said: “NIPS can confirm there was a minor fire at 1230 hrs at Magilligan prison today (May 12, 2014). Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service attended the incident at the Alpha accommodation unit which was evacuated.

“The incident was declared over at 1313 hrs and the prison is now operating normally. There were no injuries reported to staff, visitors or prisoners.”
