A 19 year old woman who became abusive towards police and staff at Altnagelvin Hospital has apologised for her behaviour.

Before Londonderry Magistrates Court was Ciara O’Brien, of Windridge Drive, who came to police attention after she tried to jump into the River Foyle in the early hours of June 6. Police escorted her to Altnagelvin where she tried to leave on several occasions and began shouting and screaming.

Asked to calm downby a staff member, she laughed in the nurse’s face and when warned by the PSNI, she told them to “f*** off” and was arrested.

A defence solicitor said she totally accepted her behaviour was unacceptable and that those she was abusive towards had been trying to help her.

He said the 19 year old wished to apologise for her behaviour.

Imposing a six-month Probation Order and alcohol programme, the District Judge said she was lucky to have avoided jail.
