Just eight B&Bs across Londonderry and Strabane have signed up to a welcome scheme supposed to help lure hikers from continental Europe to the North West.

Only in Belfast (seven), Lisburn and Castlereagh (five) and Antrim and Newtownabbey (five) have fewer accommodation providers signed up to the ‘Walkers Welcome Scheme.’

By contrast the Causeway Coast and Glens has the best sign-up record in Northern Ireland with 55 providers on board.

Tourism Minister Jonathan Bell confirmed: “Tourism NI currently has 195 accommodation providers successfully accredited with the Walkers Welcome Scheme.”

The scheme helps direct visitors to suitable establishments that pay particular attention to their various needs.
