A former IRA man from Londonderry who wrote a book about his involvement in a bombing campaign in England in the 1970s says the “Rosary bead brigade involved in armed conflict must suffer the pangs of conscience.”

Shane Paul O’Doherty spoke about his involvement in the IRA in an interview aired as part of the RTÉ religious affairs series, ‘Would You Believe?’ on Sunday, April 3.

“People in the Rosary bead brigade involved in armed conflict must suffer the pangs of conscience and suffer the requirements of atonement to their last breath. I am in that category,” he said.

“Many say to me your crimes and your sins are too great and you shouldn’t be associating yourself with the Catholic Church,” he told the makers of ‘Atonement,’ the ‘Would You Believe?’ documentary special.
