Foyle Women’s Information Network’s annual conference, entitled Peace Power & Patriarchy II, will now be held on Tuesday October 20 in the Maldron Hotel, from 3.30pm to 9.30pm.

Award winning, columnist, international public speaker and author, Mona Eltahawy, will be coming to the city for the event. The conference will be followed by a wine reception and a book signing by Ms Eltahawy.

Keynote speaker Mona Eltahawy is the author of ‘Headscarves and Hymens: Why the Middle East Needs a Sexual Revolution’. During the 18-day revolution that toppled Egypt’s President Hosni Mubarak, she appeared on most major media outlets, leading the feminist website Jezebel to describe her as ‘The Woman Explaining Egypt to the West’.

In November 2011, Egyptian riot police beat her, breaking her left arm and right hand, and sexually assaulted her and she was detained for 12 hours by the Interior Ministry and Military Intelligence.

Speakers taking the conference stage along with Ms Eltahawy will be Dr Cathy Higgins, Maureen Hetherington and Lilian Seenoi.

The conference will feature, workshops, round table discussions, musical interludes and dinner.

FWIN co-ordinator, Catherine Cooke, said: “Our annual conferences are always a great success and we are sure this year will be no exception.

“We are delighted that along side our excellent local speakers we have the multi-talented Mona Eltahawy joining us. This is an unmissable opportunity for local women to hear from someone who has unique insight into the oppression of women in the Middle East.”

To register telephone 02871 266291 or email info@fwin.org.uk by October 12. Places are limited.
