First ever Walled City Tattoo

Members of Sollus Cultural Promotions were extremely excited as their plan to create the city’s first ever Tattoo was announced last Thursday in the City of Culture programme launch.

The Walled City Tattoo is set to grace the city with its presence in August 2013.

Members of the team have appeared at various other tattoos including the Edinburgh Military Tattoo for four consecutive years as well as tattoos around Europe, such as Holland, Switzerland and Berlin.

The Walled City Tattoo will comprise a 600 strong cast which will be a blend of home grown and international talent.

Preparations are well underway to form a 100 strong dance troupe which will see Highland and Irish dancers come together to form the largest spectacle of traditional dancers in Ireland.

“The massed bands will represent a traditional favourite for any tattoo but will also reflect the strong musical traditions within our city as we see pipers, drummers, brass and flutes come together to create a spine tingling atmosphere and perform the classics of our city.

“This event will showcase the shared heritage of Derry ~ Londonderry as we once again bring to life the shirt factories, the sailors and the dancehalls,” says the programme.

Sontas, a newly formed local band will provide live music throughout the show. Their fresh and modern approach provides an exciting taster of new compositions that will feature at the Walled City Tattoo.

Top Secret Drum Corps will be special guests to the city. From Basel, Switzerland they are renowned as one of the world’s most prolific choreographed percussionists, with a technique that will get pulses soaring which is sure to leave a lasting legacy on creative percussionists of the future.Their energetic and unpredictable style has drummed its way into the hearts of Tattoo spectators across the world.

James Kee one of the Tattoo production team says this will be one of many highlights happening in our City next year and having secured the services of the Top Secret Drum Corps is a major attraction to anyone who loves culture with a twist.

“The Walled City Tattoo will be an event to be shared by all including tourists and visitors, as we reflect on the ‘good old days’ as well as ‘hard times’, this extravaganza will captivate what we hope to be a cosmopolitan audience,” he says.
