Final preparations underway for Londonderry Christmas market

THE final preparations for Londonderry’s Christmas continental market are underway before it opens for a month from December 1 to December 22.

With festive fir trees, fairy lights, Swiss style chalets and a magical vintage carousel, the market will create a central location for Christmas shoppers to sample the enchanting atmosphere of a European winter market, as the Guildhall Square and Waterloo Place are transformed into a winter wonderland, whilst the historic Walls provide the perfect backdrop for this seasonal retail experience.

Mayor Kevin Campbell said: “The Christmas market will provide a truly unique family shopping experience where citizens and visitors can enjoy some of the traditional crafts and produce on offer.

“We are delighted to see the participation of numerous local retailers who will be setting up shop and taking advantage of the transformed external setting to trade.

“I would encourage everyone to visit the market and enjoy the festive fun and Christmas cheer in what is already a vibrant and buzzing shopping hub here in the North West. “We are confident that this will increase trade opportunities for the important retail period, which will continue on as we start the countdown into 2013 and our City of Culture status. With live music, carol singing, and festive fayre, Derry will be truly transformed this December.”

The Christmas Continental Market offers a wide range of retail and culinary treats and will open daily from Saturday 1st - 22nd December. There will be everything from cheeses and olives, to Belgian chocolates and French tarts, to exotic and rare meats and savoury crepes to give shoppers a taste of the continent, as well as a range of handmade crafts, winter woolens, books, Christmas decorations, festive wreaths and decorative plants.

Relax in the refreshment and bar area and take time out to enjoy some live music and enjoy a glass of warmed mulled wine whilst soaking up the Christmas atmosphere in the heart of the city.

Children can also enjoy the magic experience by taking a ride on the vintage carousels and taking in a visit to Santa at Santa’s snow globe.
