Talented young Londonderry singer Una Morrison is asking her fellow citizens and compatriots to help send her to New York to perform in an off-Broadway show.
The 18-year-old, who earned her spurs at the Derry Feis and by performing at St Cecilia’s over the years, explains: “Last week I entered an American-based competition called ‘Give A Girl Her Chance Contest,’ which could result in me getting the opportunity to go to New York and perform on Broadway.
“This is a massive dream of mine and if I won, it would mean the world to me.
Una entered the competition after the producers of ‘Daddy Long Legs’ announced they were running the contest to allow one singer perform ‘The Secret of Happiness’ to bring down the curtain at the Davenport Theatre in Hell’s Kitchen.
Tony-Award winning director of Les Misérables, John Caird, directs the musical, which is based on the classic novel which inspired the 1955 movie starring Fred Astaire.
A yarn in the spirit of Jane Austen, the Brontë Sisters, and ‘Downton Abbey’ - it’s a heart-warming Cinderella story about a witty and winsome young woman and her mysterious benefactor.
It has charmed audiences of all ages from Los Angeles to London.
Critics are cheering: ‘Daddy Long Legs’ has “echoes of ‘She Loves Me’ and top-notch performances” and it “is one of the most enthralling, entertaining and moving love stories on the American musical theatre stage.”
It stars Megan McGinnis and Adam Halpin with music and lyrics by Paul Gordon.
But in order to have a chance of fulfilling her dream, Una needs your help.
She said the winner will be decided on a public vote and appropriately enough this Feis week she’s asking for yours.
“I am the only candidate from Ireland and I would really appreciate all the home support I can get.”
Voting began on Wednesday and closes on April 6.
