Waterside Presbyterian Church 150th anniversary

A year of celebration lies ahead for the congregation of Waterside Presbyterian Church, which is 150 years old.

Clooney Terrace Presbyterian Church, as it used to be called, opened on Sunday, March 4, 1866, when the Waterside was in the very early stages of expansion.

Now a thriving church serving its community, a range of activities and events have been planned to mark the anniversary, including the launch of a calendar in January.

Festivities continued at the weekend with an exhibition of wold and not so old photographs and church records dating back to 1866.

March is going to be a very busy month.

The actual anniversary will take place on March 4 and the anniversary month will include the Boys Brigade 75th Anniversary Weekend from March 11 to 13, and on March 20 the BB Battalion Church Parade to Waterside Presbyterian Church will take place. At the end of the month, on March 27, there will be an Easter Morning Service with Rev Willis Cordner in the pulpit as the guest preacher.

April will be another busy month for the church, with a Church Mission, led by Mr Billy Patterson from April 8 to 10 and again on April 15 to 17, on April 8 there is also a Congregational Dinner to mark the start of the Mission. A Men’s Breakfast will take place on April 9 and a Ladies’ Coffee Morning and Young People’s Event will take place on April 16. The next day Billy Patterson will visit Irish Street.

Celebrations continue in May with a Melody Makers Concert on May 6 and two days later Morning Service will take place with guest of honour the Moderator, Rt Rev Dr Ian McNie.

An enchanting event will take place on June 4, when the congregation will embark on an old style excursion to Portrush by train and they will take lunch in the Presbyterian Church Hall.

September will include a river cruise to Devenish Island among other things and in October there will be a special feeling to the Harvest Services and TV cook Jenny Bristow will be staging a cookery demonstration. A Curtis Magee concert will be a highlight in November and December will bring the year of celebration to a close with a Carol Service on December 7 and on December 18 there will be a Carols by Candlelight event
