Farry opens discussion on employment law

The Minister for Employment and Learning, Dr Stephen Farry MLA, today launched a discussion paper on a review of employment law in Northern Ireland.

The discussion paper seeks views from stakeholder organisations and members of the public on a number of outline proposals. The proposals fall under three broad themes: early resolution of workplace disputes; tribunal reform; and measures to reduce regulatory burdens.

Launching the Review, Dr Farry said: “Northern Ireland faces significant economic challenges. This discussion paper seeks views from employers, representative organisations, and the public on a wide range of proposals to make Northern Ireland an easier place in which to do business.

“Of equal priority will be the necessity to ensure that workers’ rights are not diminished.

“I would emphasise that this is not a consultation on fixed proposals. Instead, I am providing suggestions for possible reform. Stakeholders and the public have the opportunity to shape policy now, before we develop firm options for change.”

A commitment to review employment law was included in the Executive’s Economic Strategy, launched in March this year.

Comments are sought by 20 July 2012. The Department will consider the comments provided, and will develop firm proposals by the end of the year.
