Do you fancy life on the high seas?

IF you felt a touch of envy as you watched the rapturous welcome received by the Clipper crews on their homecoming to Londonderry in July, then you won’t want to miss the opportunity to hop on board and see for yourself what challenges the crew faced on their spectacular round the world voyage.

Aspiring sailors can sign up for an exciting three day trip on board our own Londonderry vessel, and avail of a three day sailing course on the Atlantic.

The crew will sail the yacht under the expert tuition of some fully qualified sailing instructors, and all those taking part will acquire the skills required for the internationally recognised RYA (Royal Yachting Association) ‘introduction to yachting’ certificate.

Marketing and Communications Manager with Derry City Council, Claire Lundy, said: “Since the Clipper event we’ve had so much positive feedback about the boating potential of the Foyle from around the world, and so many people have said they would have loved the chance to actually experience sailing on one of the yachts.”

“We’re delighted now to be able to offer members of the public the opportunity to experience life on board our own Clipper vessel, and get a taste of the challenges at sea, as well as gain a practical introduction to sailing. It will be a real physical test, but great fun and a fantastic adventure on board.”

Development Officer for the Loughs Agency, Andy Sides, said: “The courses are accredited and it’s a great opportunity for anyone wanting to start to sail, or to develop their sailing skills further, under the guidance of expert crew instructors.

“This is a chance to get a taste of ocean sailing in a racing yacht - the Derry-Londonderry Clipper - and the project will help establish a legacy from the fantastic success of the Clipper Homecoming Festival this summer.”

The three day course will cost just £99, covering the provision of all meals and the loan of appropriate clothing and equipment, tuition and certification for the duration of the trip.

In addition there will be opportunities available for free places through a Kick Start to Work programme.

The programme is funded by Derry City Council and the Loughs Agency with support from Foyle Ports, Clipper Ventures and Kick Start to Work. Application forms must be submitted no later than 4pm on Friday November 2 and can be picked up at Derry City Council Offices, or downloaded at www.derrycity.gov.uk/clipper
