Institute manager Kevin Deery says a lot of prayers are being said for the recovery of young midfielder Niall Grace, who is still in a critical condition in the Royal after he was assaulted in Derry city centre in the early hours of Sunday.

“We were up with him last night,” said Mr Deery. “He’s still in an induced coma, in a critical condition, with bruising and a bleed to the brain.”

He added: “Thankfully there were no signs of the swelling getting any worse from the first MRI scan to the latest one.

“The last thing anyone wants is to wake up to deal with what his family had to deal with on Sunday morning.”

“It puts things into perspective. We cry about so many things but this just makes you realise what’s important.

“There are a lot of people praying for him and we just hope he pulls through, He’s a great, smart young fella.”
