The PSNI have arrested a 34-year-old Limavady man on suspicion of manslaughter and facilitating illegal entry into the UK.
The arrest came after a man was found dead last week in a shipping container at Tilbury Docks in England. The arrest took place just after noon yesterday on the A1 at Banbridge, Co Down. The suspect was taken to Antrim Serious Crime Suite pending his transportation to the UK mainland for questioning by Essex Police.
PSNI officers also carried out a search of the man’s home address in Limavady.
The man found dead inside the shipping container was 40-year-old Meet Singh Kapoor who was one of 35 people, including 15 children, from Afghanistan found at Tilbury. Police believe the people were victims of human trafficking.
Essex police yesterday confirmed the man was from Limavady and that a number of officers had travelled to Northern Ireland as part of the investigation.
Acting Detective Chief Inspector Martin Pasmore, of Essex Police, said: “This is a fast-moving investigation which has already involved a number of police forces and law enforcement agencies from across the United Kingdom and Europe. I am very grateful to officers from the PSNI for their assistance this morning. We will continue to work closely with all of our policing colleagues as we pursue our investigation to bring those responsible for this crime to justice.”
