A fine of £100 was imposed at Londonderry Magistrates’ Court on a man who was so drunk in Altnagelvin Hospital he was incomprehensible. Patrick James Bernard McGuigan (52), of Donegall Place, admitted the offence on June 18.

McGuigan was taken to hospital shortly after 4pm and refused medical treatment. He was so intoxicated he was incomprehensible, could not stand or walk unaided.

Defence counsel Nicola Coulter said her client had an extensive record arising out of his long standing alcohol problem, adding he would be dead within a year if he did not stop drinking.

Ms Coulter said this had encouraged McGuigan to seek treatment and he had been off alcohol for a long period.

The barrister accepted her client was an inconvenience to hospital staff and wished to apologise for his behaviour.

District Judge Barney McElholm fined McGuigan £100.
