Army Bomb Squad called out

It has been confirmed that the Army Technical Officers have been called to the ongoing security alert in the vicinity of Letterkenny Road area of the city.

Motorists are advised that the Letterkenny Road has been closed at its junction with the Lonemoor Road and the Mullenan Road as the ATO have mobilised to deal with a possible bomb alert.

The Braehead Road has also been closed at its junction with the Letterkenny Road and the Crevagh Road due to an ongoing police operation. HGV’s are being diverted towards Queens Quay from the lower deck of the Craigavon Bridge. Motorists are advised to seek alternative routes.

There are no further details at this stage.

Meanwhile, the security alert in Ballykelly, which resulted in the evacuation of a number of homes and lasted from last night until this morning, has been declared an ‘elaborate hoax.’

A spokesperson for the PSNI said: “The security alert at the Carnamuff Road, Ballykelly has now ended. ATO (army technical officers) have finished at the scene and the alert has been declared an elaborate hoax. Two objects have been removed for further forensic examination.

“Enquiries are continuing and police would appeal to anyone who saw anything suspicious in the Carnamuff Road area over the last few days to contact police at Limavady 0845 600 8000. Or if someone would prefer to provide information without giving their details, they can contact the independent charity Crimestoppers and speak to them anonymously on 0800 555 111.”
