Another gun discovered

The discovery of another canon or gun in the grounds of the former Ebrington Barracks has prompted one of the city's Alderman to seek further discussions about historic artefacts relating to Londonderry.

David Ramsey said: “I am delighted at the historical finds over the last few years on Ebrington site.

“A number of canons have been unearthed and I am looking forward to further discussions on how best to display these artefacts on site to enhance the tourism potential for the area.

“Discussions have taken place previously with Ilex and I now look forward to continuing these talks with all interested bodies to make sure the history of the area is embraced for the world to see.”

Also keen to see progress with the city’s ancient canon is Bonds Street Community Association chairman, Lloyd Magee,

“This new canon or gun was lifted out of the ground two weeks ago,” he said.

“I asked about it and was told they are going to get it checked out to see if there are any distinguishing marks to help identify if it was from a ship.”
