Independent Alderman Maurice Devenney has called for a recycling facility for Newbuildings.

“In light of the council promoting more recycling and less black bin waste for landfill, it is important a unit is sited in this area to service all of the surrounding villages,
including Magheramason and Bready.

“This area, in particular, is at a disadvantage, with people having to travel to the city to comply with council policy to dispose of recyclables.”

He continued: “It is vital that everyone plays their part in the recycling process, not least in bringing down the amount the UK is paying in fines to Europe for not meeting current recycling targets. It is incimbent on everyone to get involved.

“A number of years ago, while serving on the former Derry City Council, I raised this very issue, and I am disappointed that in the intervening years, despite the escalation in recycling awareness, a facility has never come to fruition for the greater Newbuildings area.

“I will be speaking to council officials to try and progress this vital resource for people living in the rural hinterland of the city.”
