Signal box will close in 2015

RAIL Minister Danny Kennedy has set 2015 as the date for the scrappage of the Londonderry signal cabin, the Sentinel can reveal.

Last year the paper reported signal cabin at Waterside railway station was to be scrapped once the Londonderry to Coleraine line was re-laid and re-signalled and that a small number of jobs would be affected.

Now Mr Kennedy has revealed the Londonderry signal box will be closed in the first half of 2015.

Mr Kennedy stated: “Translink advises me that phase 2 of the Coleraine to Londonderry Line Renewal Project which has an economic appraisal approved, will see the consolidation of signalling operations for that section of the line to the Coleraine Box.

“As a result, the Londonderry and Castlerock boxes will be closed. At present the Phase 2 works are planned for 2014/15 so Translink would envisage the signal boxes closing sometime in the first half of 2015.”
