NW to benefit from £4.3m active travel roll out

LONDONDERRY and Strabane are amongst four areas in Northern Ireland to benefit from a £4.3m funding allocation for ‘active travel’ projects over the next three years.

Transport Minister Danny Kennedy said Belfast and Craigavon would also benefit.

Mr Kennedy stated: “Earlier this year, I announced funding totalling £4.3m over 3 years for four council led projects which aim to demonstrate how active travel can benefit both individuals and their communities.

“Subject to meeting the conditions in their bid applications, the 4 successful bidders are Derry City Council, Belfast City Council, Strabane District Council and Craigavon District Council.”

He said his officials are working closely with the successful Councils and the results will be used to inform any decisions on the potential roll out of demonstration projects in the future.

“I can however confirm that no provision has been made in the current spending round for a further extension of the demonstration projects across other council areas,” he said.
