ILEX to lead on Fort George

DEVELOPMENT Minister Nelson McCausland says his Department has no plans to change the management company responsible for the regeneration of the Fort George Site in Londonderry.

Last fortnight the Sentinel revealed that the Department of Social Development (DSD) plans to lease part of the Fort George military base in Londonderry to the North West Regional Science Park in 2013/14.

The Fort George site was acquired by DSD in 2004 and transferred to the Londonderry urban regeneration company ILEX for redevelopment.

Now the Minister has confirmed that ILEX and DSD will jointly progress the site, stating: “There is a lot of work ahead in Londonderry around the implementation of the One Plan and the delivery of the UK City of Culture.

“I am keen to ensure that the combined resources of my Department and Ilex are used in a way that will ensure that all this work is moved forward as quickly as possible.

“As part of this, I am considering whether my Department should take on some of the project management role for Fort George which is currently carried out by ILEX.”
