DCC urges ‘incinerator’ session attendance despite boycott call

DERRY City Council is encouraging people from the Strathfoyle and Maydown area to attend an information session on Wednesday (February 27) to find out about a proposed new incinerator in the area despite a local youth group’s call for a boycott.

Some local residents have expressed opposition to the proposed new waste facility - considered a type of incinerator by the EU - that will dispose of at least 120k tonnes of household rubbish generated by households from Moyle to Strabane every year.

But a spokesperson for Derry City Council stated that a planned Public Information Session provides an opportunity for the community to receive information on the treatment technologies under consideration by the North Waste Region Waste Management Group (NWRWMG) with regard to the Waste Management Plan and the Residual Waste Infrastructure Project.

The Council made the plea after the Enagh Youth Forum (EYF) called for a boycott of the session in the Strathfoyle Youth Club.

The Forum’s management committee said their reason for issuing the call was that a joint delegation of the Enagh Youth Forum (EYF) and the Strathfoyle Women’s Activity Group had asked the Council’s Environmental Services Committee to carry out a health impact study to establish if there is any correlation between existing industry and cancer rates in the area, rather than for an information session.
