Derry City Council has agreed to progress with works to regenerate the Brandywell Sports Stadium with a comprehensive report on the project promised in the near future.
The greyhound track will be moved to the Showgrounds pitch and the existing grass pitch will be replaced with a synthetic surface under the plans.
Four changing rooms are proposed and essential works to address some pressing health and safety issues are also promised.
The works will begin this summer. Derry City Council has committed £2.75m.
In October, Culture Minister Carál Ní Chuilín promised £2m for the Showgrounds and Daisyfield elements of the much broader Foyle Valley Masterplan.
In 2012 Council had hoped to be able to deliver a £10.3m, 5,100 seated stadium meeting UEFA category II requirements, with restored grass playing pitches, speedwork track and training facilities at the Daisyfield, by the end of 2014.
