Three fire engines were tasked to the Trench Road on Sunday night after arsonists targeted a derelict sports hall.

A Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service (NIFRS) spokesperson said the fire was contained by crews less than an hour after the incident was reported.

“NIFRS received a call at 8:04pm to a report of a fire at derelict premises at the Trench Road, Gobnascale area of the city yesterday evening,” the spokesperson confirmed.

“Three Fire Appliances from Crescent Link Fire Station were deployed to the scene. Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus and using a hosereel jet dealt with a small fire in a single storey derelict sports hall. Another small fire was also located in the premises and was extinguished by Firefighters.

“NIFRS finished at the scene at 9:03pm and the fire is being treated as deliberate.”
