INDEPENDENT MLA David McClarty has called on Coleraine Council to back a campaign by prison officers to save Magilligan Prison from closure.

Mr McClarty, who is also an elected councillor for Coleraine, was speaking at Tuesday’s meeting of Coleraine Council when it was agreed to participate in a joint meeting with Limavady council to discuss the planned closure with Justice Minister David Ford.

Mr McClarty told members that he had recently met with the Prison Officers’ Association who are starting a campaign to save the jail.

“I suggested to them that they should make a presentation to all councils on this campaign,” he said.

“So I would ask Coleraine Council to accede to that request from them when it comes.”

This was agreed by all Council members.
