Almost £2m spent by PSNI on informers but expenditure deceased last year

Nearly two million pounds were spent on informers by the PSNI over the past five years although there's been a recent dip in expenditure on what police term covert human intelligence sources (CHIS).

Between 2011/12 and 2015/16, £1,995,392 was spent on informers across the North.

The PSNI said the £2m “does not include any payments made to informants where funding may have been supplied by exempt bodies”.

It was down to £297,158 in 2015/16.

Over £400,000 was spent on informers in 2011/12, 2012/13 and 2013/14, whilst £375,730 was spent in 2014/15.
