Thousands employed in civil service in city - but just four investment staff

THE Northern Ireland Civil Service (NICS) - one of Londonderry's largest employers - had 1,626 staff on its pay roll at the end of last month.
But, whilst a substantial 817 civil servants are employed by the Department of Social Development (DSD) in Londonderry, other departments such as Enterprise, Trade and Investment (DETINI) and the Office of First Minister and Deputy First Minister (OF
MDFM) have a negligible presence here with just four staff and three staff respectively.
Moreover, the Department of Culture Arts and Leisure (DCAL) employed no civil servants in Londonderry at October 19, 2009, according to detailed figures released by the Department of Finance and Personnel (DfP).
The DSD was easily the largest civil service employer in the Foyle constituency. Three hundred and forty-seven DSD workers are based in Carlisle House; 214 at Temple Road; 161 in the Foyle Jobs and Benefits Office; 55 in Crown Buildings; 36 in Orchard House; and four in Richmond Chambers.
The Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (DARD) was the next largest employer with 197 staff. One hundred and forty-nine DARD workers were employed in Orchard House in the city; 28 in Crown Buildings; 15 in the Vet's Office at Foyle Meats Ltd; and five in the Vet's Office Wm Grant and Co Ltd.
Finance and Personnel (DfP) employed 126 civil servants at Waterside House and 51 at Orchard house - a total of 177.
Elsewhere the Department of Employment and Learning (DEL) employ 127; the Department of Education (DE) 123; the Department of the Environment (DOE) 83; the Department of Regional Development (DRD) 72; the Department of Health, Social Services and Public Safety (DHSSPS) 23.
The figures were released in response to a query by Foyle MLA Mark Durkan do not include those on career break and include permanent, casual, industrial and non-industrial staff.
