LONDONDERRY athlete Jason Smyth touched down in Beijing on Sunday, as he prepares to try and win two gold medals at the Paralympics games next month.
The Eglinton sprinter is one of the favourites in both the 100 and 200 metre races in the Chinese capital.
"Obviously I would like to win a gold medal, who wouldn't? and I do aim to win," he said.
"But you can't be prepared for whatever someone else is going to do.
"I have trained hard this season and done everything to ensure that I'll perform at my best.
"If I do that, I will be pleased, gold medal or not.
"Now I have got to a stage where I'm excited and can't wait to get away," he admitted prior to his departure.
"Since the opening ceremony for the Olympic games it started to hit home and the goose bumps started."
The 21-year-old visually-impaired athlete acknowledges that after the Paralympics he wants to prepare for London 2012 and where he could take on Jamaican sprint superstar Usain Bolt.
"As far as I'm concerned Beijing is only a stepping stone to 2012.
"Beijing will get me the experience to compete on the big occasions and see what it's about, so 2012 is definitely a huge goal for me to compete in both the mainstream and Paralympics Games, but that's a long way away and we'll worry about that after Beijing."
Only last week Bolt broke two world records in both the races Smyth will be competing in and the 21-year-old knows he'll not emulate that.
But two gold medals are certainly within reach.
"First off I can't worry about what other people or what the press have to say.
" It is only a distraction. I need to just focus on what I can do, because that's the only thing you can influence on at the end of the day.
"So if I can just keep focused and be prepared and do what you do best then that's all I can do."
