LONDONDERRY Alderman Gregory Campbell has said it is only a matter of time before dissident republicans develop the capacity to kill.
Mr Campbell's comments came after an off-duty police officer was wounded by a booby-trap car bomb at the village of Spamount, just outside Castelederg.
It is understood the officer, a Catholic, was travelling to work at the time. He was pulled clear
of his vehicle, which had caught fire, by locals at the scene.
Gregory Campbell said: "This looks as if it has all the hallmarks of dissident republican activity and as such will cause alarm within the security forces."
Last November the Real IRA claimed responsibility for shooting PSNI officer, Jim Doherty at Bishop Street in Londonderry and another officer in Dungannon. In February this year police mounted a huge security operation across Northern Ireland because of concerns that dissidents were planning further attacks.
The fact that this attack took the form of an under car booby trap is an indication that dissidents are upping the ante, according to Gregory Campbell.
"Unfortunately this bears out the fact that the latest IMC report was correct in it's assessment of dissident republicans," he said.
Mr Campbell said that now more than ever the PSNI require information from the entire community to bring those responsible to justice.
"It could only be a matter of time now before they develop the capacity to kill, perhaps a matter of weeks," said Gregory Campbell.
Foyle MP Mark Durkan said: "This attack was a cowardly and despicable attempt to intimidate police officers from carrying out their duties to the community. They are also an attempt to intimidate the wider public. These efforts will not succeed. The community is determined in its view that the PSNI is an acceptable and accountable police service – two things which these so called 'republicans' are not.
