A WATERSIDE woman newly reconciled with her erstwhile errant beau - Strictly Come Dancing heart throb Vincent Simone - says fatherhood has matured him and he is no longer as selfish as before.
Susan Duddy, aged 36, who hails from Altnagelvin, was left heart-broken in April when the twinkle-toed Italian admitted to having an affair with 31-year-old fellow Strictly Come Dancing star Kristina Rihanoff when the Londonderry girl was five-months
pregnant.
The former Lisnagelvin Primary and Clondermot High School pupil swiftly dumped Mr Simone but told a Sunday newspaper how she has now forgiven him and that they have been back together for over six weeks.
The air hostess - who has attended actor Matt Damon and singer Lionel Ritchie in the past - says the birth of their son Luca, aged 10 weeks, has helped bring the couple closer together.
"It's wonderful," she said. "We are very happy. There are very strong feelings between us. We really want to make it work and he's trying very hard to make amends. Fatherhood has softened him.
"He's been brilliant with Luca. He's a natural daddy. He changes nappies, does feeds, plays with him and talks to him in Italian. He's very much a hands-on father, when time permits.
"In the past, his career has always been the main priority. But I think he's grown up a lot. He's more considerate. He's matured, become more responsible and is not as selfish."
Mr Simone is presently working on the current series of the hit BBC show with celebrity dance partner, former EastEnders actress Natalie Cassidy.
Last year Susan says she suffered anxiety over her boyfriend's chemistry with former the S Club 7 singer Rachel Stevens.
But nothing prepared her for the shock of Mr Simone's affair just weeks after he had visited Londonderry to meet the folks and celebrate the New Year.
"I was absolutely shocked when he told me in February that he had started sleeping with Kristina," Susan said at the time. "Not that I'm blaming her solely for the affair. It was the way she behaved afterwards that caused me the greatest pain."
But Susan says her feelings for Mr Simone never changed: "He's a good man, who made a mistake and came clean about it. I never stopped loving him."
And when she went into labour with Luca in August it triggered a reconciliation with the Strictly star.
"It was incredible because he had always said that he wanted to be present for the birth. It was a very emotional time.
"I was amazed that he stayed for the whole labour and coped so well, because he's usually very squeamish and really doesn't like hospitals or doctors. But he was great. He surprised me and, I think, himself.
"There was no big moment when we decided to give it another go. We were talking over the phone one night, about two weeks after Luca was born, and he said, 'When are you coming over for good?' I arrived two weeks after that," she said.
Mr Simone says having a child with Susan has fulfilled his life. "I have always loved Susan. She is an amazing woman and a wonderful mother, and I adore her," he said.
"I can't quite believe my luck at the moment. I'm having an amazing time on Strictly and my private life has come together since Susan moved here and Luca was born. Things just couldn't be better.
"It's great to be a dad. I didn't know what an amazing experience it would be to have a child. It has really fulfilled my life," he added.
Speaking after a visit home in January Susan said Mr Simone loves Londonderry.
"He loves it here. He's been over a couple of times since last February but I think this is the first time people really began to recognise him because of the show.
"Because he's Italian he loves the way people from Northern Ireland are very family-orientated. And it was brilliant to get back. I get really homesick when I'm away. I'm very close to my family and I have some very good friends at home. It's lovely to see everybody," she said.
