LONDONDERRY'S Miss World hopeful Laura Patterson is shaping up a good outside bet for the prestigious beauty pageant in South Africa next month.
But, whilst betting has been relatively quiet so far bookmakers say this is likely to pick up closer to the time of the Miss World final on December 13 with odds set to shorten on the Londonderry beauty queen over coming weeks.
As the Sentinel went
to press two leading Irish bookmakers were offering odds of 33-1 and 50-1 on Laura landing the Miss World title.
This was considerably shorter than leading UK bookies who are placing the nineteen-year-old as a rank outsider at roughly 100-1.
Sharon McHugh of Paddy Power said the bookmaker would love to see the Stoneypath native follow in the footsteps of former Miss Ireland and Miss World, Rosanna Davison - the daughter of popstar Chris De Burgh - who took the crown in 2003.
"Our odds probably don't represent great value to be honest because you'll probably get higher odds with other bookmakers (100/1 or thereabouts with UK bookmakers)," said Ms McHugh.
"Because we're an Irish bookmaker we are seeing more of a patriotic punt on her. Unfortunately the odds would suggest Laura more than likely won't win this year as she has a lot of competition. We are seeing plenty of interest for Miss Puerto Rico and Miss Mexico.
"We've taken a total of €249 on Laura, which really isn't a lot compared to what we have taken on Miss Puerto Rico - in excess of €3,500.
"Still, she's fantastic looking and a lovely girl to boot so we'll cross our fingers that she does follow in Rosanna Davison's footsteps to win Miss World," she added.
Nicola McGeady of Boylesports also cited patriotic punters for shortening the odds on Laura. She said she expected this trend to continue as betting hots up over the next month.
"Boylesports are offering odds of 33/1 on Laura Patterson. She was originally 50/1 but due to some support in the last week, we cut her odds," said Ms McGeady.
"Overall, we haven't seen a lot of interest in her. Miss Puerto Rico is the strong favourite at 6/5. However, it's only early days and the competition hasn't even begun to warm up.
"We fully expect to see a turn around in the betting closer to the time, and we have no doubt that Miss Patterson will receive a lot more support. We would be delighted to see Laura follow in the footsteps of Rosanna Davison and bring home the crown."
Fans of the Waterside girl will no doubt take the relatively long odds being offered with a pinch of salt. Those who like a bet may follow the example of proud boyfriend Greg who made a killing on Laura's triumph in the Miss Ireland competition in September when he put £20 on her to take the crown at 20-1.
Apart from Laura, Miss Puerto Rico and Miss Mexico, Ms McHugh of Paddy Power said a flutter on Miss England would represent good value.
"Miss England (it might be worth noting) has a great chance - she's 20/1 and has been getting a lot of press coverage as she is Linford Christie's niece - she may finish in the top five so could be worth an each way bet!" she said.
