Council backs SARC proposals

DERRY City Council have unanimously backed calls for a specialist unit for victims of sexual assault to be built in Londonderry.
At present victims of rape and sexual assault have to travel to Belfast, a situation SDLP councillor Helen Quigley described as "far from ideal."

At a meeting on Monday, Ms Quigley welcomed the cross party support for her motion for a state-of the-art Sexual Assault Referral Centre (SARC) to be built in the city.

"Foyle has the highest number of victims of rape and sexual assault and at present they have to travel to Belfast, which is far from ideal after going through such a traumatic ordeal.

"A SARC in Derry would meet all the needs of those victims by providing medical and emotional support under the one roof in a state-of-the-art facility," she said
