City to celebrate historic walls

A SERIES of events celebrating Londonderry's unique history and culture are taking place in the city this weekend.

The Council organised event is part of an all-Ireland celebration of walled towns and cities and will see the Guildhall Square and City Walls areas come to life with a an action and fun packed programme of activities and events for all the family.
The Mayor, Councillor Gerard Diver speaking at the launch of the programme, said he was delighted the Council was involved in this unique celebration of culture and heritage.
"Irish Walled Towns Day is a celebration of town walls and is a unique opportunity for us to celebrate our culture and heritage and to provide fun entertainment for families.
"The Council is delighted to be working with the Irish Walled Towns Network in making these events happen and I look forward to see as many people as possible to come along and join in the celebrations," he commented.
Among the events organised for the celebrations include a silver exhibition at St Columb's Cathedral (Sat 16 Aug – Sat 13 Sept from 9 am – 5 pm), and a silversmith demonstration at the Tower Museum on Monday 18th and 25th at 2 pm.
A photographic competition for adults, children and professional photographers has been organised to coincide with the event, the details of which can be obtained from www.derrycity.gov.uk/economicdevelopment
A one-day conference to mark the 400th anniversary of the Rebellion of Sir Cahir O'Doherty will be held at the Guildhall on Friday 22 August while the Guildhall Square will come alive to a summer craft, arts and food market on Sunday 24 August from 12 noon to 5 pm.
The Roaring Meg Busking festival and competition will take place on the City walls on Saturday 24th August and will see the Walls animate with music and singing. Street performers will be in the city centre through Saturday and Sunday while kids and adults will be encouraged to take part in a unique opportunity to Climb Derry's Walls – when a climbing frame will be located in Guildhall Square on Sunday afternoon from 1 to 5 pm.
One of the highlights of the weekend long events will be the drama performance on the Walls which will see members of the Georgian society prepare to celebrate their past and commemorate the burning of the city walls by Cahir O'Doherty and their neighbours in the aftermath of the Flight of the Earls.
This unique dramatic display is not to be missed and is sure to be a popular event for tourists and locals alike. It will take place at the Double Bastion on the City Walls (beside the Verbal Arts Centre) at 2 pm and 3.30 pm on Sunday afternoon 24 August.
