5 new mothers won over to breastfeeding
FIVE local mothers have been recruited to a health-boosting breastfeeding network in the North West.
They qualified in an eight week Open Course Network training course in breastfeeding, run by the Western Trust and Public Health Agency and supported by Strabane SureStart.
Audrey Moore, Western Trust Lactation Midwife said: “Breastfeeding provides many benefits to both mum and baby such as reducing the risk of infections, allergies and childhood diabetes.
“Breastfeeding mothers also lower the risk of breast cancer, ovarian cancer and osteoporosis. Breast milk contains everything a baby needs for healthy growth and development, at the same time as developing a close bond between mother and baby.”
Sarah Davidson, Western Trust Health Improvement Department added: “Having more volunteers to spread their knowledge and experiences throughout the western area is a valuable asset.”
If you are interested in supporting new mums and babies with their breastfeeding experience contact the Western Trust’s Parentcraft Department based at Altnagelvin Hospital on 02871345171 or South West Acute Hospital on 02868628333. Alternatively come along to Breastfeeding Group held at Strabane SureStart, Melmount Road, Strabane every Wednesday morning between 10 and 11.30am.
