CULTURE Minister Gregory Campbell MP, MLA launched the Foyle Ulster-Scots Festival in the City on Monday.
Speaking at the event in the Verbal Arts Centre the Minister said: “Ulster-Scots has a key role to play in the promotion of cultural diversity in Northern Ireland.

“Londonderry has a wealth of history and strong connections with the Ulster-Scots
heritage and I believe that developing the City’s culture will help maintain its position as one of the most popular visitor destinations in Northern Ireland.

“The colour and vibrancy of the Foyle Ulster-Scots Festival is a great attraction for visitors and local people and helps their appreciation and understanding of the language, literature, music and dance of the Ulster-Scots tradition.”

Minister Campbell recently stated his commitment to Ulster-Scots and to bringing forward proposals for the establishment of an Ulster-Scots Academy.

He said: “I believe the time is right for the promotion of the Ulster-Scots heritage, language and culture and I am pleased that additional funding of £3million announced recently will help boost to Ulster-Scots over the next three years.

“After many years of limited resources and insufficient understanding I am confident that we can now move forward and promote an Ulster-Scots tradition that all can be proud of.”

The festival runs from the 4 – 8 August and includes activities such as dance, enactments, lectures and music.
