'Songs of The Fountain', an album by renowned Londonderry musician Roy Arbuckle will be launched on June 5 and will be exclusively sold through the Londonderry Sentinel and the Newsletter.
Back in February, the Sentinel was the first to reveal that 'Songs of the Fountain' was to be made and given a boost by the inclusion of Tom Newman, the man who produced Mike Oldfield's seminal record Tubular Bells for the Virgin label in 1979.
Now
the album has been finalised Roy Arbuckle told the Sentinel: "I'm really happy with it, it has turned out great. Reaction to it so far has been brilliant. In fact some of the reaction has been very emotional, we have had grown men crying, especially to songs like 'Remembering the Fountain', will the children from the Fountain Primary School on it."
In 1991, Roy Arbuckle founded Different Drums in response to being asked to contribute something musical to community relations. Different Drums harnessed the power of the Lambeg drum and the bodhran, traditionally regarded as the respective musical symbols of the unionist and nationalist communities.
With 'Songs of the Fountain' however, Roy Arbuckle has chronicled his passage from childhood to manhood in his native Fountain and in doing so charts the physical erosion of the area to the present day.
"This is about something that people have lost. They lost a sense of belonging. So many had to move away to make way for redevelopment, for simple economic reasons or because of violence. I meet a lot of guys my age who spent a lot of time in England in the city centre and when they moved back they didn't want to go to the suburbs," Roy said.
The involvement of kids from Fountain Primary School was another bonus for Roy Arbuckle. He said the fact the school is facing a steady decline in pupil numbers prompted him to get the children involved.
Roy said: "There is a sense the property developers are hovering over the greater Fountain area which until the troubles was a mixed area but afterwards created a divided city. It was all gone 20-30 years before these kids were born so it I thought it would be better for them to learn about it through music instead of a dry history book."
'Songs of the Fountain' will be officially launched on Thursday, June 5 at 7pm at Fountain Primary School. Some of the songs will be performed, including those performed by the Fountain Primary School Choir.
