THE University of Ulster's dance company Open Space leaps onto the Londonderry dance scene this month with its ground-breaking new dance theatre production.
Collision is a unique programme of six original dance works that will be performed in Londonderry and Belfast. Open Space, which is run entirely by final-year dance students, was launched in 2008 as part of Ulster's Dance degree programme based at
the Magee campus.
The upcoming shows will also be choreographed and performed by the students in partnership with two professional choreographers in an evening that showcases the skill and talent of these emerging young artists.
Internationally acclaimed dance artists Gill Clarke and Dylan Quinn have worked closely with the students to produce two innovative pieces of dance.
Dylan Quinn, who is a part time dance tutor at the University, has over 15 years experience as a choreographer, director and performer.
Having worked all over the UK, Dylan has returned to Northern Ireland to help develop dance activities in Fermanagh and is currently touring a solo performance across the UK and Ireland.
Gill Clarke is currently Visiting Professor of Dance at Ulster. A founding member of the prestigious Siobhan Davies Dance Company, she was recipient of a London Dance and Performance Award and is world renowned for her teaching and performance in release technique.
One of the highlights of the performance will be a specially commissioned piece written by renowned Northern Irish composer, Christopher Norby. Bild Lilly is a collaboration of dance and new music for a live chamber ensemble of seven musicians.
Dr Sophia Preston, Course Director of the Dance degree programme at Ulster, said: "Open Space, like the degree programme, has been developing and strengthening year on year and I am delighted at the wealth of invention, intensity of collaboration and high technical standards evident in this year's work."
Collision will be performed at the Playhouse Theatre, Londonderry on Thursday, May 14.
Tickets priced at £5 / £3 concessionary can be booked on: 028 7127 8027. Once again this performance will begin at 8pm.
