EGLINTON cricket ground was looking a picture last Saturday morning bathed in glorious sunshine and ready to host the Billy Henderson Properties Ltd Section One play off between Limavady and Strabane.
Unfortunately the game never took place as the Roesiders sent a solicitor's letter to the North West on the day before the game informing them that they were claiming the title.

The events that led to this scenario started two weeks previously when Limavady were due to play Fox Lodge and Glendermott were to take on Strabane - both twenty/20 games.

The North West maintain that they notified the clubs that the game was to be played over three nights due to the poor weather, saying there seemed to be no complaints from the clubs.

The Limavady game failed to beat the weather on the first two nights; therefore it was abandoned with no points for either side.

However after a wash out on the first night the Glendermott game got started on the second night enabling them to finish on the third night which saw a Strabane victory which left them level on points with Limavady.

However Limavady maintained that the Glendermott game shouldn't have gone to a third night, therefore leaving them champions.

After receiving a solicitor's letter the North West Cricket union issued the following statement: "The North West Cricket Union regrets to announce that the proposed play off Division one title between Limavady and Strabane scheduled for Eglinton on Saturday September 12th has been postponed. This postponement has been deemed necessary so that the union can consider its position and seek appropriate advice following a threat of legal action by solicitors acting for the Limavady club on Friday afternoon.

"To proceed with the play off in these circumstances would have been in the union's opinion unfair to the North West cricketing public, to its member clubs and to the Strabane club in particular."

The question now being asked is will there be champions this season?

And even if the problem can be resolved would there be a ground available to stage a play off if it's needed?
