WELB Cross Country Challenge
Over 300 pupils from 20 primary schools recently participated in the Western Education and Library Board’s (WELB) 2012 Cross Country Challenge, Londonderry, Strabane and Limavady heat. The highly popular event was held at Templemore Leisure Complex.
It proved a victorious day for Steelstown Primary School, St Patrick’s Primary School, Broadbridge Primary School and Longtower Primary School. Longtower scooped first place in the girls’ team event, closely followed by Broadbridge, in second place with St Patrick’s, Pennyburn, claiming third place. In the boys’ team event, Steelstown claimed first place with St Patrick’s and Broadbridge placed second and third respectively.
Caoimhe Walsh from Broadbridge Primary came first in the individual girls’ event.
Second and third place went to Kayla McLaughlin, Longtower Primary and Mollie McMonagle, St Therese Primary School.
Winner of the individual boys’ title was Sean McIntyre, St Patrick’s, who crossed the line just before Kyle O’Reilly from St Therese Primary with Shea McLaughlin from St Patrick’s taking third place.
IN all 16 pupils (eight boys and eight girls) participated from each school over a distance of 1km.
This year, the top six boys’ teams and the top six girls’ teams and individual winners from the Tyrone and Fermanagh heat and the Londonderry, Strabane and Limavady heat will qualify to take part in the WELB’s Cross Country Challenge Final.
Ryan Cunningham, WELB Sports Development Officer and event organiser, praised the commitment and effort of all the pupils who took part.
“It’s great to see so many young people participate in the Cross Country Challenge, they should be very proud of their achievement; they have represented their school extremely well.”
“Qualifying schools will have the opportunity to represent the WELB at the Northern Ireland Cross Country Finals, which will take place in Belfast. The event is a great flagship, highlighting the tremendous talent in our schools, which must be carefully nurtured and developed.”
